Among the Churches

Franklin Street will soon be adorned by a handsome stone church, standing on the fine lot at the north-west corner of the intersection with Seventeenth Street, which was recently purchased by the Christian Scientists. It will be the first church built on the Pacific coast by a Christian Science congregation, although the denomination has handsome edifices in Boston and other Eastern cities.

The decision to proceed at once to build was reached this week. On Monday evening a meeting of the congregation was held and a vote taken, which showed the sentiment was unanimous in favor of erecting a church. It was equally unanimous in favor of building in stone.

The new church will be of a size to seat from seven hundred to one thousand persons, and it will be Gothic in style. Besides the main auditorium there will be a Sunday School room. The exact amount to be spent has not been determined, but it will probably exceed thirty thousand dollars. The society paid eight thousand dollars for its lot and has four thousand now in bank. On Monday night it was voted to proceed immediately to raise twenty thousand more.
