Relations between the US and China were tense over the weekend after Chen Guangcheng, a prominent Chinese legal activist jailed for criticism of the country’s “one-child” policy, escaped his house arrest last week and reportedly sought refuge in the US embassy in Beijing. The US wants to ensure the safety of Chen and his family ahead of scheduled economic talks between the two countries later this week.

Syrian state TV announced Monday that a number of people had been killed in suicide bomb attacks in the northwestern city of Idlib, where the administration’s Air Force and Military Intelligence divisions are headquartered. The attacks were carried out in defiance of a UN-backed ceasefire, which is currently being monitored by only a few dozen unarmed international observers.
