New: Chinese dissident escapes

Relations between the US and China were tense over the weekend after Chen Guangcheng, a prominent Chinese legal activist jailed for criticism of the country’s “one-child” policy, escaped his house arrest last week and reportedly sought refuge in the US embassy in Beijing. The US wants to ensure the safety of Chen and his family ahead of scheduled economic talks between the two countries later this week.

New: Myanmar edges onto the international stage

Myanmar – one of the world’s most isolated societies – may finally be emerging on the world stage after decades of military rule. The country’s nominally civilian government, which has been in power since March 2011, has freed several hundred political prisoners, relaxed censorship, and allowed a host of other reforms. The victory of pro-democracy figure Aung San Suu Kyi in a recent parliamentary election has made citizens even more hopeful for the country’s future.
