New: Islamist arrests in France
French police arrested 19 suspected Islamist militants on Friday, seizing weapons and carrying out dawn raids in the cities of Toulouse and Nantes. Some of those arrested were thought to be connected to Mohammed Merah, the gunman who carried out three attacks on soldiers and a Jewish school on March 22nd.
“Religion and the responsibility to love” discusses how each of us can break an apparent cycle of religiously-motivated hostility and retribution with prayer that recognizes God’s communication to people of all faiths.
New: Aftermath of the Trayvon Martin shooting
A month after teenager Trayvon Martin was shot by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman in Florida, the case has drawn major national attention. Thousands have since protested Martin’s death as unjust. Lots of things are still unknown about what took place between Martin and Zimmerman before Martin was shot. Local prosecutors are reinvestigating the case, and the FBI has begun a civil rights investigation into the shooting as well.
“A different neighborhood watch” explores how prayer can not only bring about a just resolution, but can also defeat the fear and mistrust that would divide communities and give false purpose to violence.
New: US Supreme Court hears arguments on health care law
The US Supreme Court heard oral arguments this week as it prepared to deliver a ruling on the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act, the health care law that is one of the signature pieces of legislation of President Barack Obama’s administration. Many of the arguments centered around an “individual mandate” provision that would require most Americans to either have health insurance or pay a penalty. The Court will deliver a ruling early in the summer.
