A North Korean rocket launch, ostensibly designed to put a satellite into orbit in honor of the 100th anniversary of the birth of national founder Kim Il-Sung, failed on Friday. The rocket flew for only a short time before crashing into the water. The US and UN condemned the launch in spite of its failure, arguing that it was a secret test of long-range missile technology banned under UN sanctions.

A ceasefire that went into effect in Syria on Thursday has been largely upheld so far, observers say. A number of citizen protests have taken place since then, but UN envoy Kofi Annan said the ceasefire has been relatively respected, and he plans to send neutral monitors to Syria to oversee the withdrawal of troops.
