Eye on the World: Friday, June 1, 2012

As bloodshed continued in Syria, newly-inaugurated French President François Hollande suggested this week that military intervention shouldn’t be out of the question. But his remarks met with resistance in the US, Russia, and especially Germany, which is still sensitive to criticisms about its lack of military participation in Libya last year. One German spokesman suggested that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad should be brought before the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

This editorial, “To preserve life,” talks about how we can support Syria and other nations in the grip of conflict. The article asserts that a discouraging picture of violence doesn’t tell the real story – and that far from ignoring cruelty and bloodshed, a prayerful insistence that God is present helps to dissolve and prevent these atrocities.

Former US presidential candidate John Edwards was declared not guilty on one of six counts of misusing campaign funds; the judge declared a mistrial on the other five amid a jury deadlock. Edwards was accused of misusing campaign money during his 2008 campaign. This verdict, coupled with the Supreme Court’s 2010 “Citizens United” ruling, points to a more deregulatory approach to campaign finance, and sets a higher bar for what constitutes illegal activity in that sector.
