World hunger: the solution starts with respect

A wide variety of people come to the soup kitchen where I volunteer. There are seniors struggling to stretch their monthly pension checks, and families with parents who look more scared than the children.

There is Alonzo, who has his own apartment but is still working out his drug dependency issues. And there’s Dennis, who blesses everyone who doesn’t put money in his cup when he stands outside the McDonald’s.

It’s an amazingly supportive community of people—they celebrate when someone gets a job and comes back to visit, or when someone finds a way to pay for school, including room and board.
