From The Directors

On Radiocasting

Because radio casting presents increasing opportunities for sending out over the air Christian Science programs, it has seemed necessary for The Christian Science Board of Directors to define in this respect the relative responsibilities of branch churches and societies and of Committees on Publication.

Earlier in the history of broadcasting, the Directors made a rule that a Christian Science church service or a lecture on Christian Science should always be radiocast from the auditorium where given, and not sent out from studios. This rule still stands, and experience has proved its wisdom. Subsequently, some of our churches have, without the disapproval of the Directors of The Mother Church, participated in programs sponsored by others, or undertaken in an experimental way regular short periods of broadcasting from studios.

Now, it is deemed advisable that all future radiocasts, and all that have already been arranged for but not completed, shall conform as soon as may be possible to the following stipulations:

1. The radiocasting of all services and lectures on Christian Science shall conform to the above-stated rule and be sponsored by the churches that give them; that the Committees on Publication shall cooperate with the churches in this work, especially in respect to publicity.

2. That, primarily, the Committees on Publication shall be responsible for all radiocasts from studios; and that those local churches wishing to support such activities shall cooperate fully with the Committees on Publication in carrying forward the programs.

The one who takes charge of the radio program and reads citations or selections might be the Committee on Publication or some other competent person chose from the membership of a local Christian Science church. For the reason that radiocasts from studios should not be regarded as services, it is desirable that but one, not two, read the selections, and that the program be confined to one or more of the following, namely, citations from the Bible, citations from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," selections from other writings by Mrs. Eddy, selections from the authorized literature published by The Christian Science Publishing Society, and hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal, read, played, or sung.
