My attention has been drawn to two references to Christian Science in your issue of the 26th ult., which call for correction. In one case the writer refers to Christian Science as a "fancy religion."

Christian Science is simply primitive Christianity, that is, it conforms to the whole of the teachings of Jesus the Christ unadulterated by any man-made doctrines or dogmas.

With regard to the word "science" and the correctness of its employment in the name "Christian Science," the following definitions are taken from Webster's Collegiate Dictionary: "science" is "any branch or department of systematized knowledge;" while "knowledge" denotes acquaintance with, or clear perception of, facts. And "systematize" means "to reduce to system or method." Therefore, to be Science, Christian Science must be able to prove itself to be a system of clearly perceived facts relative to the teaching and works of the Founder of Christianity, Jesus the Christ. Christian Science gives us an entirely logical and understandable explanation of the teachings of the whole Bible. It teaches us how we may, here and now, by taking Jesus' words as our guide, and his life as our model, perform the works he did and taught his disciples to do. It enables us to heal the sick without any material aid whatever, and to do this work in the same way that his disciples and the early church did it; in short, it gives us a "system," or "method," whereby these same works may be done to-day, and are being done with ever increasing certainty and knowledge. Therefore, in naming her great discovery "Christian Science," Mrs. Eddy used the one combination of words in the English language that could adequately describe its action and purpose in human experience.
