Nothing Can Hurt Man
[Original article in German]
"Christian scientific practice begins with Christ's keynote of harmony, 'Be not afraid!' Said Job: 'The thing which I greatly feared is come upon me'" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, pp. 410, 411). Many people are afraid of weather and climate. They think that rain, sun, cold, fog, and so on may be injurious to their health; and usually that which they consider to be harmful does appear to injure them. On page 386 of Science and Health we read, "So long as mortals declare that certain states of the atmosphere produce catarrh, fever, rheumatism, or consumption, those effects will follow,—not because of the climate, but on account of the belief."
Weather and climate, with their accompanying phenomena, have not the power to make man sick; they are material manifestations, lacking intelligence. There is, however, a so-called law of mortal mind according to which the false beliefs and fears of mortals produce the very results they dread. This material law is made null and void by God's spiritual law. As false opinions concerning God, the universe, and man are corrected through the revealed truth of Christian Science, harmony and health are restored.
Christian Science teaches that God created all that exists, that He is Love, and that all He created is harmless and useful. In Genesis we read, "And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." Let us cling to these facts with devout confidence, and repudiate every thought of fear. God is Spirit, and He is good; and "in him we live, and move, and have our being." God is omnipotent and omnipresent. If we abide by this teaching it will be easy for us to reject all erroneous thoughts of fear and to experience the protection of the ever present loving Father. Mrs. Eddy writes on page 384 of Science and Health, "Through this action of thought and its results upon the body, the student will prove to himself, by small beginnings, the grand verities of Christian Science."
