Ask AI . . . or God?

On the train, a woman wearing a local university’s sweatshirt asked ChatGPT about an economics concept she was trying to understand. Next to her, a college-age guy was consulting AI about why his girlfriend was mad at him—and what to do about it.

It might sound funny, but it made me think of the magazine you’re currently reading and its weekly testimonials by people who’ve gotten answers to problems ranging from difficult academic concepts to relationship issues, and everything in between—because while it seems like AI has ushered in an era of unlimited access to information, something broke the knowledge barrier long before that. Thousands of years ago, the man named Christ Jesus proved that the real source of intelligence is the all-knowing Being named God. And a century and a half ago, a woman named Mary Baker Eddy followed up by writing a book that shows us how we, like Jesus, can rely on that divine intelligence for answers. It all begins with trusting God enough to ask.

Juxtaposing Christ Jesus and AI might seem like an odd pairing, but Jesus’ life proved that we always have immediate access to whatever we need to know—no technology required. Here are a few things Jesus knew that he couldn’t have figured out on his own. The Bible says he knew people’s thoughts. He knew, again and again, what the people he encountered needed for healing. He even knew specific things about people before meeting them—like Nathanael, whom he knew had “no guile,” before they’d had a single interaction (see John 1:47).
