Our occasional series on how people have nurtured their public practice of Christian Science healing.

'I wanted to learn more'

When our eldest daughter was born I began to attend church again so that she could learn about Christian Science. A couple of years later, and with two young children, I found myself asking for prayerful support from a Christian Science practitioner. These needs for healing were met, and I had a wonderful experience because I was also learning so much.

During this time I joined my branch church and shortly afterward was elected First Reader. This was a challenge as I was so inexperienced. However, I loved what I was learning as I studied the Bible Lesson more and prepared the Wednesday testimony services.

I was working as a hairdresser part time and I began to talk with my clients about my growing understanding of Christian Science. My desire to help others led me to notice when people were searching for a different approach to healing, and my practice began in a small way. With a young family and church services to prepare, I would get up at 3 a.m. so that I could pray for my hairdressing clients, who had asked me to pray for them, before my day began. Soon after this started, we needed to move, and we moved too far away for me to continue with my part-time job. Prior to this move, the thought kept coming to me that I should start leaning more on God, but there just didn’t seem to be time to respond to this idea.
