Success begins with God

It’s hard to appreciate  those words success and diversity until you’ve met and chatted with Lewis Hall, college instructor and National Emmy award-winning art director. Even though he resists the word success, Hall was elected last November to serve a four-year term on the board of the Beverly Hills Unified School District in Los Angeles. Lewis is a Christian Scientist who has never been in politics before, but seldom hesitates to speak his mind. “My desire is not just to improve the schools,” he says with controlled firmness, ”but to make them a beacon of excellence to inspire schools across the country.”

Hall has been a design director for CBS Entertainment, and won two Emmys while working with CBS Evening News. He’s traveled around the world eight times, written a novel and published a cookbook, and last year launched an iPad app that teaches middle-school math and includes more than 120 hours of instruction. Despite the range of his commitments, Hall sets aside quality time to spend with his wife, Hava, and their two college-age daughters.

During one of his occasional visits to Massachusetts, Lewis sat down with me to share his thoughts about his diverse career, and with cautious modesty, his successes.
