Health-care reform and the 'Supreme Court of Spirit'

As the Supreme Court prepares to hear oral arguments on the health-care reform law from March 26 to 28, legal scholars say it will be one of the most momentous and pivotal cases in United States history. What role can prayer play to help ensure a judicious resolution that patterns divine law?

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, requested Christian Scientists to “pray that the divine presence may still guide and bless . . . our national judiciary; . . .” (Christian Science versus Pantheism, p. 14). Each of us has a valuable contribution to make to the nation’s prosperity and sense of unity by fulfilling this request.

Our prayers can start with a humble willingness to set aside cherished notions in favor of choosing the Christlike path of seeking to know and do God’s will. Mrs. Eddy pointed out in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures that “. . . self-denial, sincerity, Christianity, and persistence alone win the prize, as they usually do in every department of life” (p. 462).
