Walking in the wildflowers
One day in high school, one of my best girlfriends, Jessi, and I were sitting in my car, listening to a Tom Petty song. Jessi then turned to me, and confessed very sweetly that whenever she heard the Tom Petty song, “Wildflowers,” she thought of me:
You belong among the wildflowers
You belong in a boat out at sea
You belong with your love on your arm
You belong somewhere you feel free.
When I asked Jessi why this song made her think of me, she said, “Because you deserve it.” This was a special moment between us, not only because of what Jessi had said, but because at this time in high school, her parents’ house had become a second home to me.
