Letters

I applaud your recent decision to refer to Mary Baker Eddy by her last name, Eddy.  This editorial change will resonate well with the larger, public audience, which I assume is the prospective readership for any successful publication, including the Sentinel.

When visitors come to the downtown New York City Christian Science Reading Room where I work, they frequently want to discuss favorite or current authors whose writings are having an impact on their views of God, spirituality, theology, or daily living. They might speak of C. S. Lewis, Rob Bell, Brian McLaren, or Philip Yancey, referring to them either by full name or last, but never with the prefix “Mr.”

So, it would seem a bit quaint for me to then introduce the profound and healing effect of Eddy’s groundbreaking book on all things spiritual, Science and Health, by calling the author “Mrs. Eddy.” It just wouldn’t compute. Her writings are too significant to thus marginalize her.
