Building on the bedrock of spirituality

“Rock collecting and Sunday School” www.newburyportnews.com. April 30, 2011.

David the shepherd boy must have known something about rocks. He picked five smooth stones from a stream and chose the perfect one, which he used to successfully defeat Goliath. Of course, David’s victory over Goliath was much more than finding the right stone and taking aim at Goliath. He was confident that God would be with him when he went to battle. He knew God was his deliverer—his “rock.” David said, “The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; the God of my rock; in him will I trust . . .” (II Samuel 22:2, 3).

In the Christian Science Sunday School on Inn Street in Newburyport [Massachusetts] where I teach, we do want our students to learn something about rocks, as well—to collect some smooth stones of spiritual understanding that help them deepen their knowledge of God.

Mary Baker Eddy, the discoverer and founder of Christian Science, includes a definition of rock in the glossary of her book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. She defines rock in part as “spiritual foundation; Truth.”
