Vision restored
Last summer I was dedicated to supporting my wife through some physical challenges. This involved my getting things she needed, taking her to medical appointments, and generally supporting her in any way I could. During this time it was particularly important to me that I remain clear about what I understood as the truth about man’s being in Christian Science—and to make vigorous efforts to further clarify that understanding.
One morning during this period, I woke up and found that my vision was so blurry I couldn’t make out the time on the clock across the room. Since I had many things to do, I worked around it the best that I could. During the next week, however, the condition got progressively worse. Reading became very difficult, and when I was driving, although I was fine on the road, I started to have trouble making out some of the signs and lights.
Finally, it got to the point where I thought I might lose the ability to read and to drive. During this time I was praying with the support of a Christian Science practitioner. When I expressed to her the fear of losing these abilities, immediately she offered this comforting correction: “Let’s show it for what it is—a lie!”
