A CASE OF SPIRITUAL SURGERY
One Sunday afternoon during my last semester before graduating from Stanford University, I was part of a group of about 20 students who got together to play a game of football. No cleats, no pads, no helmets—just rock-'em-sock-'em tackle football. We finally quit when only a few weren't too tired to keep going.
The next morning, I had great difficulty getting out of bed because of painful soreness. Though the soreness receded over several days, one spot on my arm remained painful 24 hours a day for the next few weeks.
The university provided free universal health care for students, and it was suggested that I check in with the coaching staff. Over several visits they tried to help me through physical therapy, hydrotherapy, electrotherapy, and a few other specialties. But nothing helped, and I continued to be in 24-hour pain.
