'THE BIBLE IS ALIVE, IT SPEAKS TO ME'

I REMEMBER lying in bed as a little girl, with my head turned to the wall, talking and singing my heart out to "my best Friend." I was actively communing with God, motivated by the assurance that He was always there with me. Thoughts of love and safety, joy and sharing, praise and adoration, would stay through the night and well into the next day, when I would once again steal away from my activities to search out and chat with my Friend.

As I matured, I realized how very important those childhood experiences were. They had taught me to rely on God's Word with confidence; to feel safe and sure that His communication to me, through Bible study and prayer, would be ongoing. Mary Baker Eddy wrote in Science and Health that "the intercommunication is always from God to His idea, man" (p. 284). It never occurred to me to question the authenticity or truth of that statement.

A few years ago, I witnessed a wonderful example of how Bible stories can help children overcome their fears. Our church was offering a monthly Bible Story Hour for young children at the public library. One day, shortly after a destructive flood had swept through our Texas town, a woman brought her granddaughter to the Bible program. The story that month was about Noah and the ark.
