CONFIDENCE IN GOD'S POWER HEALS BACK INJURY

Years ago a family member gave me his used chair for my new apartment, and left it outside for me to bring in. It was very heavy, but rather than carry it around front, I decided to lift it over the three-foot-high cement wall of the patio, in order to take it in through the rear. As I lifted the chair over the wall, I felt a sharp pain in my back.

Over the next couple of days, it was difficult for me to move and impossible to lift anything because of the pain. I began praying to understand that my real identity as God's beloved spiritual child couldn't be harmed. The basis of my prayer was from the Bible: "God created man in his own image," and later "Thou [God] art of purer eyes than to behold evil" (Gen. 1:27; Hab. 1:13).

I reasoned, as I'd been taught in Christian Science, that since God is good and did not create physical injury or pain, I could not—as His image or expression—experience them. My normal response was to turn to prayer because growing up I had learned in Christian Science Sunday School that the power of God heals the ills of the flesh. In addition to the Bible, I read Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. As I prayed and studied, I felt more of God's love in my life and began to lose my fear that I could be harmed. The pain lessened, and I was able to move around more freely.
