THROUGH A SPIRITUAL LENS

SUNRISE AT SINAI

The Bible portrays God's glory as a fire atop Mount Sinai (see Ex. 24:17). As I stood on the site traditionally identified as Mount Sinai and watched the sun rise, I couldn't help but agree.

In order to take this photograph, I woke up at 1:00 a.m. and soon began the journey of several miles up a moonlit mountain, first on a camel and then on foot. Though I felt exhausted when I reached the summit, my climb was luxurious compared with Moses', who had neither camel to carry him nor steps to steady his climb.

Surrrounded by other pilgrims, I leaned forward on a boulder and waited. After half an hour, orange and purple hues were visible over the surrounding mountains. Then, the sun's rays threw those rugged outlines into sharp relief.

Had the sun been shining when I began my ascent, I might have turned back because of the intimidating uphill climb it would have revealed. But the darkness forced me to "walk by faith, not by sight" (II Cor. 5:7). As a result, I was blessed by this breathtaking view. |css
