SEVERE CUT QUICKLY HEALED

About three years ago, my two sisters and I were making lunch for a small family gathering. I was chopping lettuce, when I accidentally cut deep into the tip of my thumb, going about a quarter of an inch into the nail bed.

My first reaction was a gasp because it was painful, but then I immediately declared, "Nothing has happened." This declaration was based on my many years of studying Christian Science and the knowledge that my being, which is entirely spiritual, could never be altered by a material event, nor could I ever step out of God's protection and care.

My sister, who is also a Christian Scientist, agreed with my declaration. She recited to me a familiar statement from Science and Health: "Accidents are unknown to God, or immortal Mind, and we must leave the mortal basis of belief and unite with the one Mind, in order to change the notion of chance to the proper sense of God's unerring direction and thus bring out harmony" (p. 424).
