HUMILITY BRINGS HEALING
Some years ago, while I was playfully attempting an athletic feat, my knee locked at a ninety-degree angle. I was immobilized, and in excruciating pain. For the next day, I stayed in bed on my back with pillows supporting my leg. In the meantime, my wife went to a local pharmacy to rent a wheelchair and crutches so that at least I would be able to get to work. My leg remained in a locked position for several days. It was apparent that this challenge wasn't just going to go away with time. To gain my freedom, I chose specific treatment through prayer.
The many healings I'd had through Christian Science had proved to me that thought determines experience, including the physical condition. In this case, too, I knew I had to address my mental state. As I began to examine my thoughts and motives more closely, I discovered that far too frequently I had been using human will to achieve results at home, at work, and in other activities. I saw that some of these willful impulses needed to stop altogether. Others were well intentioned, but needed to be brought more into accord with God's will through my quietly listening for His direction rather than just pursuing my own.
In the Bible, I found this passage: "I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, and every tongue shall swear" (Isa. 45:23). This struck me hard!
