Prayer can stop fear

I am very grateful to Christian Science, which helps one understand the power of Love. There's a lot of violence in Rio de Janeiro, and people are often afraid. But through my study of Science and Health, I've been able to understand that God governs and maintains His creation with love, and that's what protects everybody. The Bible explains it very well: "Perfect love casteth out fear" (I John 4:18).

One night almost at midnight, my intercom rang, and an unknown male voice asked me for money. I live on the top floor of a building, and I did not let him in because of safety regulations.

Soon I heard the man's voice again and realized he had been able to gain entry to the building in some way. He was having a heated discussion with a female resident. I decided to go down and talk to him. I had a feeling of confidence and tranquility, which came from my trust in God. Only one thought guided me: "This is God's beloved son, and there's nothing to fear." As I approached him, I could smell alcohol on his breath. I greeted him in a firm but loving tone.
