I had wanted to forgive her all along

The path out of resentment is shorter than we might think.

"I've found the flute of your dreams!" she said. I hung up the phone and did a small dance of excitement. After I'd spent many months in a fruitless search for a new instrument, my flute teacher had just returned from a trip to the National Flute Convention—and she had brought home with her the very instrument I'd been looking for.

I couldn't wait to try it out. From the little my teacher had told me over the phone, the flute had all the features I was looking for—and then some. Not only that, she'd even managed to talk the price down, so my parents and I were getting a real deal.

The blow came when my teacher called back later that day. "I know you were supposed to come over and try out the flute this afternoon," she said. "But I've decided that I want this flute, too. I can't give it up."
