WANTED: AFFORDABLE HOUSING
"You want WHAT?" asked the voice on the other end of the telephone, incredulously.
"A rent-controlled apartment," I answered calmly.
I had become accustomed to real estate agents deriding my search for an affordable place in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This was an expensive town. But I knew these rent-controlled apartments existed, and I felt it was the only way I could afford to live near my new job. And time was running out. My temporary housing was about to expire.
