Let's redeem those 'senior moments'

THERE'S A TERM in common usage these days. It refers to someone being physically weak or forgetful or lacking mental alertness, because he or she is getting older. It's called having a "senior moment."

My friend sent me this "senior moment" joke, which got me thinking. Two elderly women were driving down the road. The passenger noticed that her friend did not stop for a stop sign. She thought this was peculiar, but didn't say anything. Then her friend ran another stop sign, and another one. Finally she blurted out, "Hazel, do you realize that you ran three stop signs?" Hazel answered, "Heavens, was I driving?"

I laughed, but as I thought about the joke, a promise from the Bible stole into my thought: "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind" (II Tim. 1:7). To me, this means that God's love literally maintains us—keeps us sound in body and in mind. That we can expect to retain our faculties.
