LOVE AND MATH

It had been a long week for my daughter. Final exams were coming up, and two of her classes were having major tests just weeks before the regular final exam period. The studying was heavy. One morning when I came downstairs at 6:15 she was already up, dressed, and had been studying math for some time. She looked glum. "How is it going?" I asked. Almost in tears, she said she just didn't understand the problems, and she hadn't gotten one right yet.

I was quiet, and then said that I'd pray. I felt a holiness in the desire to help. I found myself saying something I'd never thought of before. It seemed fresh and logical and true. I said that Love, God, is the Principle of the universe. That means Love is the Principle of everything in the universe—mathematics, relationships, music, academics, everything. Since Love is the Principle of mathematics, that means that Love makes it understandable. Love makes every problem have an understandable answer. Love makes itself known and felt. Love is clear. Love isn't obscure or difficult. Love is reliable.

I suggested that she take just a few moments and acknowledge that God, divine Mind, was giving her the thoughts she needed. And then I went into the room. I began to affirm that she couldn't be afraid, because this was all about divine Love being felt and expressed. And there is nothing to fear in Love. "Perfect love casteth out fear" (I John 4:18). I could feel the truth that Love is knowable, and knew that mathematics expresses the order and intelligence of Love. My daughter reflects this Love, and so she reflects the understanding.
