Extreme shyness overcome

I had been very shy and lonely ever since I could remember. Even in high school I was too afraid to talk to anyone but my closest friends. I would also avoid participating in class discussions. I would think about being less shy, wanting the courage not only to ask someone out on a date, but to have the eloquence to speak up in class and say what I was thinking. Yet, it never happened. I often cried painful tears of loneliness.

However, deep down I knew that if I turned to God, the one Spirit who is Father-Mother, this problem could be overcome. I had experienced many healings in my life, including the mending of a broken toe, through prayer alone. As the shyness continued throughout college, I read the Bible as well as Science and Health for help. I learned how I could benefit from God's presence. God does not see me as someone who is shy or held back by fear. Yet I also knew that God would not remove this debilitating fear from me simply by waving a magic wand.

I realized that if I wanted to overcome fear and shyness, I would have to put God's law into practice in my life. I couldn't just ask that fear and shyness be removed and then do nothing about it. Mrs. Eddy explains, "... prayer is answered, in so far as we put our desires into practice" (see Science and Health, p. 15).
