VIVA!*
My neighbor
tore my trellis down:
It lay there broken,
all dark brown.
He sawed the vine,
and chopped the stems,
Intent it'd never
grow again.
But I saw a willow,
greening.
I looked away
that ugly day
From human mind's response
(dismay)
to see a willow,
greening.
I saw the Principle
of life,
that continuity
of good
that carries on,
though unkind acts,
misunderstood,
play havoc
on the earthly scene.
I then looked up, and saw my God
and saw the willow,
greening!
Lindsay Gould Schaefer
