INTERVIEW

Enrichment through diversity

Milagros altagracia Phillips came to the United States from the Dominican Republic as a child. It was in New York City that she had to make her first adjustments to a different culture and to the racial and language issues that challenged families like hers in the 1960s.

She soon added fluency in English to her native Spanish, attended the Music and Art High School, and studied fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Later, she got a degree in business management from Lesley College, Massachusetts.

After years of soul-searching, Ms. Phillips committed her life to racial healing. While raising three children, she established her own company, Empowerment Plus, which is "dedicated to developing and facililtating diversity programs that inspire the corporate spirit."
