Overcoming timidity

How I learned to value myself

I HAD DIFFICULTY WITH timidity right from childhood. In fact, when I was young, it seemed the best way was just to agree with what others said or wanted so that I could hide my timidity. This course of action, however, was extremely frustrating, to say the least.

After I'd prayed to be free from this sense of imprisonment, the thought came that I should study dramatic art. This illustrated to me what I later learned was the description of angels given in Science and Health, which states, "God's thoughts passing to man; spiritual intuitions, pure and perfect; the inspiration of goodness, purity, and immortality, counteracting all evil, sensuality, and mortality" (p. 581).

This was the answer I needed. Subsequently I felt led by these "spiritual intuitions" to leave my hometown and go to a larger city where I began to take classes. Eventually, I was accepted by a drama college.
