Prayer restores ability to walk

Before I moved from Wisconsin to Florida, I found one morning that I could not get out of bed. My left leg was swollen, and I could not move it. As I lay there, I started to pray.

Christian Science treatment had healed me of malaria when I was a teenager, so I had no hesitation in trusting it now. I read "the scientific statement of being" from Science and Health, and the line "All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all" (p. 468) stood out to me. I reasoned that since all is Mind and its manifestation, movement also was a manifestation of divine Mind, God. I thanked God that this was the truth of my being right now. This thought overcame my fear.

I slowly got out of bed and stood for a moment, leaning on my chair. Then I began moving around, at first using pieces of furniture for support. As I did so, I remembered the words and tune of one of my favorite hymns (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 139). I repeated the words and sang them with every awkward step I took: "I walk with Love along the way,/And O, it is a holy day ...."
