FROM COPING WITH BACK PAIN TO CURING IT

At one point several years ago, my back became increasingly inflexible and painful. It was difficult for me to bend at the waist, which complicated many normal activities, including such things as driving a car or even sitting down. Over several months the situation worsened. I managed the problem as best I could, trying not to draw attention to it.

For example, I rearranged my office, placing my computer and phone on a file cabinet at about chest level, so that I could stand while I worked. When people asked why I didn't sit at my desk anymore, I just answered that I was more comfortable standing. I even considered buying a standing desk for my home. I also avoided as many sit-down meetings as possible, and I stopped teaching Sunday School because the pain involved in sitting in the small chairs made it hard for me to speak.

Then one day at home I collapsed. I couldn't walk or stand. My activities were no longer just limited; they had come to a halt. I remember wondering if I would ever be able to walk again, and I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to get my work done from a horizontal position.
