Class instruction in Christian Science Mind-healing
• A new understanding of God and man.
• Spiritual regeneration.
• Physical healing.
• A more meaningful, productive life.
• An increased appreciated for and understanding of the Bible and of the life and teachings of Christ Jesus.
These are some of the benefits people experience through studying the Bible together with the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.
Additionally, there are classes that explore the spiritual method of healing practiced by Jesus and explained in Science and Health. Mrs. Eddy. who discovered Christian Science, provided for this class instruction and taught the first classes in Christian Science Mind-healing. Later, through the Church she founded, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, she established a Board of Education for continuing this class teaching.
What a pupil most needs is a steadfast desire to learn more of divine Truth, and a receptive heart expressing honesty, humility, and goodness.
Primary class instruction consists of twelve daily lessons over a two-week period. The basis of this instruction is the chapter "Recapitulation" in Science and Health, of which Mrs. Eddy says: "This chapter is from the first edition of the author's class-book, copyrighted in 1870. After much labor and increased spiritual understanding, she revised that treatise for this volume in 1875. Absolute Christian Science pervades its statements, to elucidate scientific metaphysics." Science and Health, p. 465. The systematic presentation of topics during class instruction serves to bring the Principle and rule of Christian healing into clear focus, and thus to open the pupil's thought to unlimited posibilities for spiritual progress and healing.
Authorized teachers of Christian Science are individuals who have taken the initial Primary class, and subsequently demonstrated a record of success in healing others. These practitioners then take a Normal class in the Board of Education to teach others to heal. If found spiritually and morally qualified in accordance with the By-Laws of the Manual of The Mother Church by Mary Baker Eddy, they teach Primary classes in their individual locations throughout the world.
The initiative for contacting a teacher about the possibility of taking class instruction rests with the prospective pupil. Names and locations of authorized teachers currently available to teach Primary classes can be found in the directory of The Christian Science Journal. For names, locations, and telephone numbers of authorized teachers of Christian Science, please see the directory section in The Christian Science Journal. The same divine Love that impelled Mrs. Eddy to provide for class instruction brings together pupil and teacher at the right time, and in the right way. Readiness for instruction is not determined by age or years of study or by church membership. What a pupil most needs is a steadfast desire to learn more of divine Truth, and a receptive heart expressing honesty, humility, and goodness. Having these, anyone interested will not hestitate to ask an authorized teacher for an opportunity to discuss class and what it involves. Exploratory discussions are without obligation on either side.
The very special relationship that exists between pupil and teacher, entered into and nurtured with prayer, is on solid ground. This relationship is long-term. The teacher's guidance is available for the pupil not just during the class term; it continues afterward.
Completion of Primary class confers membership in an association with other pupils who have taken class from the same teacher. The association meets annually, and the teacher addresses the pupils on topics essential to their growth in Christian character and practice.
The desire for class instruction in Christian Science Mind-healing is God-impelled and God-protected. As stated in Science and Health, "Desire is prayer; and no loss can occur from trusting God with our desires, that they may be moulded and exalted before they take form in words and in deeds." Ibid., p. 1.
