SANCTUARY

Today, there is a need for sanctuaries of all kinds. including those where people can live permanently and satisfy a search for peace of mind. Where can one find such a sanctuary?

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, indicated that the truest form of sanctuary is not a place but a state of spiritual understanding. In connection with this, she refers to the Bible account of Philip and the eunuch (see Acts 8:26-38). After listening to Philip elucidate the Scriptures, and just prior to being baptized, the eunuch declares, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God." Mrs. Eddy writes of this event: "In adopting all this vast idea of Christ Jesus, the eunuch was to know in whom he believed. To believe thus was to enter the spiritual sanctuary of Truth, and there learn, in divine Science, somewhat of the All-Father-Mother God" (Miscellaneous Writings, p.77).

Later in the same book, Mrs. Eddy shows clearly that sanctuary of this sort is available in all circumstances. Referring to God, she writes, "If He be with us, the wayside is a sanctuary, and the desert a resting-place peopled with living witnesses of the fact that 'God is Love'" (p.150).
