A recent column by Ann Landers highlighted some misprints and malapropisms that had first appeared in various classified advertising sections of newspapers around the United States. One of my favorites offered a service for sewing machines, but with a little "extra" added: "We will oil your sewing machine and adjust tension in your home for $1."
Well, who wouldn't pay a dollar—or a whole lot more—to bring a bit of peace to family life, especially on those days when everything seems to be coming apart? Too much to do. Not enough time. Too many demands from work, children, husbands, wives, the kids' schoolwork or after-school activities, on and on.
