Skin condition and painful hip healed
As a young girl I had an unsightly skin condition on my face. The doctor referred me to a skin specialist, who offered me expensive treatment once a month, and said that although the skin would improve after each treatment, the condition would return after four weeks—and it did! At this time I became aware that a friend with whom I worked was a Christian Scientist. She was a wonderful individual and just radiated love. I asked her many questions about Christian Science and borrowed a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy from her.
After reading the first sentence I couldn't put the book down. I started to attend Christian Science church services, and soon I decided to stop the monthly medical treatments and rely on Christian Science for healing. A Christian Scientist friend agreed to treat me through prayer. After a while, she encouraged me to pray specifically about worldwide problems that needed to be healed. This puzzled me at the time, but I was obedient and did my best.
At this point my sister underwent major surgery. Although all went well at first, complications arose, and further surgery was said to be needed. On the day before the proposed second operation, Mother came home from visiting my sister greatly disturbed and said she didn't think my sister would survive another operation, as she was very weak indeed. I immediately began to pray. Mother had become a little interested in Christian Science, too, so all evening and well into the night we prayed. I became utterly convinced that God is All-in-all and man is pure and spiritual. Science and Health tells us: "A spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive" (p. 463). I felt the most wonderful spiritual peace and joy. Mother felt this, too. We went to bed and slept well. The next morning, on telephoning the nursing home, I was told that there was no need for my sister to have further surgery. Rejoicing, I prepared to go to work. When I looked in the mirror, not a vestige of the skin condition was to be seen. This took place over fifty years ago, and the condition has not returned. In fact, many remarks have been made about my good complexion. This healing has remained a beacon for me ever since.
