Being a good sport

PLAYING on an athletic team means getting along with others. Being able to do that is often as important as throwing a fast pitch or scoring a goal with only a minute left in the game. But it's not always easy to be a good sport, especially when you believe that you're right and someone else is wrong. When that happens, sportsmanship might not seem as important as getting your way. Listening to God can help you be a better team player and a more successful athlete.

During my first year of high school, I was captain of the volleyball team. I liked conferring with the referees and being in charge of the other players. So when my coach told me the following season that she was going to make another girl captain instead of me, I wasn't very happy.

Actually, I was so upset that I wanted to quit. However, I decided to pray about this before I made a final decision. I started out telling God just what I thought ought to happen. As you can imagine, that didn't get me far! My job as His child is to follow His direction always, not to tell Him how to fix a problem.
