Emily Lorence of First United Methodist in Belmont [,North Carolina,] spent a sweaty week repairing old folks' roofs in Copley, Ohio.

She traveled nine hours in a church van to get there, sustained along the way by rice cakes, Skittles and youthful jabbering. She slept on an air mattress on the floor of Copley High. She got handly with a harmmer ("I didn't hit my thumb once"). ...

But it isn't just what she and her twin sister, Ashley, learned that Emily wants to talk about. It's what she hopes the rest of us learned from her choosing to climb up on those Ohio roofs.
