When I reached my early twenties, my menstrual periods began to wreak havoc on me. For two full days each month I felt awful and basically out of commission. I welcomed the end of each period with an enormous sigh of relief—only to turn around and start dreading the next one. I also felt a long-term dread as I anticipated untold days of discomfort in the years ahead of me. One day I actually estimated the number of days of misery I would have to get through between then and menopause.
That was a turning point—a wake-up call to follow Christ Jesus' directive "Heal the sick" (Matt. 10:8). The Master's command is echoed in Science and Health, where Mrs. Eddy tells readers: "Take possession of your body, and govern its feeling and action. Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good. God has made man capable of this, and nothing can vitiate the ability and power divinely bestowed on man" (p. 393).
