Coaching with a difference
Steve Morgenthaler retired last June after twenty years spent coaching sport and teaching at Principia College, Elsah, Illinois. His specialties were track and field, women's soccer and volleyball, and rugby. He was personal coach to Olympian sprinter Ngozi Mwanamwambwa in Barcelona in 1992. At Principia, he taught courses in leadership, the philosophy and sociology of sport, and the theory of coaching.
One of his students with whom we talked, described him as one of the most unselfish people he had met at school. "Morgen, as we called him, always had time for us," he said. "He really wanted to help, whether it was a question about class or a need for extra training—and he was always enthusiastic."
We spoke with "Morgen" shortly before he left the locker rooms at Principia for the last time.
