My first real proof of the healing power of the Comforter,...
My first real proof of the healing power of the Comforter, through Science and Health, came when I was about eighteen years old. I had a painful problem with a molar. The dentist treated it by taking out the nerve. The next day to my horror the same pain was back again. I did not want to return to the dentist and cried with fear. My mother gave me the above-mentioned book and said, "Just read this; many people have been healed." I was quite shocked that I did not get a loving arm around me. Little did I know then. This book became the best gift I had ever received and is my best friend along with the Bible and the Christian Science Quarterly. They travel everywhere with me.
Not knowing what else to do, I opened the book and started to read. The words instantly captivated me, and I felt the power behind them filtering into my consciousness. Wherever I opened the book, I was met with Love: "Glory be to God, and peace to the struggling hearts!" (p. 45) and "Christ is the ideal Truth, that comes to heal sickness and sin through Christian Science, and attributes all power to God" (p. 473). On and on I read, skipping over what I could not understand. It was all so new to me. And yet what I was reading was all so natural.
The pain and fear had gone. I can tell you now, many, many years later, that this book has never left my side. I read it regularly before going to sleep. The light and inspiration and understanding I receive from these pages are wonderful. Science and Health brought the Bible to life for me.
