When I was at one time working for a large company, my menstrual cycles became frequently difficult and heavy. As I had studied Christian Science for a long time, I insisted, even though it seemed otherwise, that I was spiritual and perfect. "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love" is the first statement in the first chapter of Science and Health. I had had enough healings to know this statement to be true.
Before we all started work every morning, the women would meet in the lounge. There we would visit for fifteen minutes or so. I worked with many women younger than myself, who would often complain of monthly discomfort, and I would say there is less and less difficulty with menstruation as the years go by. They seemed to believe my every word.
But then in Science and Health I read: "A change in human belief changes all the physical symptoms, and determines a case for better or for worse. When one's false belief is corrected, Truth sends a report of health over the body" (p. 194). Rather than give credence to material phenomena, as I had been doing, this statement indicated that correcting a false belief is what improves the human condition.
