Some verses from the Bible recently reminded me of an experience I'd had, in which their inspiring message brought me peace, assurance, and evidence of God's power: "And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake: and after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice" (I Kings 19:11, 12).

My sister telephoned late one afternoon to say there was a fire in a rented bungalow we owned jointly, which was located on the property where she lived. I immediately turned to God in prayer, and started to go to he—a distance of two blocks. Recalling the Bible verse I referred to, I reasoned that if God was not in destructive elements such as fire, they had no power, because God is omnipotent and His power is all good.

The fire was nearly out when I arrived, and had not spread to the adjoining buildings, a possibility that had been of great concern to the firefighters. In talking with a neighbor who had witnessed it from the beginning, I learned she had been afraid because the wind was so strong, but that "suddenly it stopped." The house was rebuilt with insurance funds, and the tenant also was adequately covered with his own insurance.
