Prison life is stressful for many inmates, but when I was imprisoned for five months I discovered that reading the Christian Science Bible Lesson daily, and communing with God each morning, kept my thought spiritually uplifted. I proved many times that God, divine Mind, protects and heals.

One day as I walked the prison yard (I enjoyed walking in the recreation yard during my lunch break), I was grateful for the quick relief from pain I had received after I struck my finger with a hammer while at a work assignment. The wound had been quite alarming and drew the attention of several other inmates. I had assured them that I was OK and insisted on continuing my work.

I immediately denied that there was any possibility in God's creation for an accident—"Under divine Providence there can be no accidents, since there is no room for imperfection in perfection" (Science and Health, p. 424). I refused to believe in the reality of an injury. The pain was now gone, but the wound remained, and I knew that my prayer was not finished.
