We were expecting our first child and had arranged to have...
We were expecting our first child and had arranged to have the delivery at the nearby hospital. When the time came, all seemed to be going well. Then the doctor came in and said she'd sent for a specialist to perform an emergency Caesarean section; according to the monitoring machine, each time there was a contraction, the baby's heartbeat was drastically reduced, and she believed that the consequences would be very serious if this continued.
The specialist arrived and said that there was no choice—he had to do what he felt was right to protect the life and condition of the child. But he said he could do nothing before the anaesthetist arrived. My husband telephoned the Christian Science practitioner who was praying with us. Then we were alone as it turned out, for an hour and a half. I thought of the spiritual meaning of children as given in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. It states, "The spiritual thoughts and representatives of Life, Truth, and Love." I held to the fact that the representative of Life must be alive; the representative of Truth must be the true image of God, therefore perfect, at peace, alert, and reflecting every quality of Mind; the representative of Love could not be outside God's loving care.
At one point, when the doctor returned to check how we were, she was surprised to find the birth proceeding normally. There was a quick scramble and then a very alert little girl entered the world. She displayed none of the expected signs of stress. Throughout the whole experience there was no pain, and neither of us had any harmful aftereffects. Our daughter continues to blossom, and she is normal in every way.
