How does spiritual healing happen?
Many people who have been seeking better health have found it when they discovered Life—God.
When I woke early one morning feeling ill, my natural and immediate instinct was to turn to God in prayer, as I had done at other occurrences of sickness. But this time, as I prayed, I felt it was important to thoroughly reason through why relying on spiritual means alone for healing is effective.
While I was lying in bed, I thought about how the Scriptures declare that God is Spirit and that man is made in the image and likeness of God. In keeping with the Bible, Christian Science teaches that man is the exact representation of God; we are each of us, in our true identity, wholly spiritual. As I pondered this idea, I began to grasp that man is not made healthy because at some time God bestows a portion of health upon him. Man has to be always healthy and harmonious because he reflects health and harmony, the spiritual qualities of God. These spiritual qualities can never be taken away from man, because they are inseparable from God.
Reasoning from a more spiritual point of view, I could see that when I thought of myself as sick, I was starting with the wrong premise about my being. I was accepting the body as my real identity and myself as a mortal; therefore, according to this reasoning, matter needed to be healed. But Christian Science teaches that for right reasoning and healing we should start and stay with the spiritual fact that our being is the expression of God's being.
