I Was raised in Christian Science and have witnessed numerous instances of God's healing power. Just last year I had a remarkable healing of burns and cuts sustained in an explosion. In the process of lighting a gas furnace, I inadvertently allowed too much gas to get into the firebox. When I struck the match, a ball of flame came out at high velocity, bringing with it years of accumulated debris. My face and neck were burned, and my skin was blackened and cut by the flying debris.
When workers in nearby offices rushed out at the sound of the explosion, I assured them that I was all right. Not wanting to alarm them further, I went to a washroom and quietly cleaned up. Looking back, I see handling the situation in this calm way as an element of the healing. I did not need at that point to be surrounded by the commotion of well-meaning attention and alarm. I was praying to understand more clearly my true spiritual selfhood, which is forever in God's care and cannot be harmed.
I then had to drive for a half-hour through heavy traffic to get home. By this time there was quite a bit of pain. I prayed and thought through "the scientific statement of being" from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. I acknowledged that my real being was in God, Spirit, not in matter. This prayer freed me from the pain.
