Deeper peace, not superficial calm
Prayer for peace takes on a fresh immediacy when you work in a conflict-torn land. But this prayer can still be a joy, not a burden. That's the view of Lance Matteson, who is Middle East field representative with American Near East Refugee Aid. This private, nonprofit organization, involved in relief and economic development, focuses primarily on the needs of Palestinian groups living on the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Lance, could you tell us about your organization and your specific job?
American Near East Refugee Aid was started after the 1967 war as a refugee relief organization, but it has evolved over a period of time into more of an economic development agency, although some relief activities are still undertaken. Our work is mainly in the agricultural sector, where we do agricultural mechanization improvement projects.
